Exciting Changes at PEA Soup!

First off, we (Daves Sobel and Shoemaker) are happy and excited to have received the baton from Dan Boisvert, Josh Glasgow, and Doug Portmore to co-edit PEA Soup for the indefinite future.  Thanks so much to D, J, and D for their excellent contributions to the philosophical community via the construction and caretaking of the blog for well-nigh 9 years.  We hope not to despoil their legacy.  But we aim higher than non-despoilage; we also have several ideas for ways of energizing the blog and expanding its reach, a few of which we will explain in this and a subsequent post.

As die-hard PEA Soupers already know, for a while now we have enjoyed a partnership with Ethics in which, relatively soon after each issue of that journal is published, we have a discussion of a paper from that issue kicked off by a commissioned précis of that paper, often a commitment from the author to respond to questions, and several commentators lined up to help launch the discussion. Each paper that gets commented on at PEA Soup is made publically available to all without a subscription.

We are pleased to announce that we have now started up a somewhat similar partnership with Philosophy and Public Affairs, Philosophers’ Imprint, Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, and JESP. We are expecting a few more such partnerships to be firmed up shortly. The result will be that there should soon be significantly more critical discussions of first-rate work in ethics, political philosophy, and related matters on PEA Soup. There will be much less “down time” between discussions. 

Additionally, we are adding a layer of associate editors who will each bear primary responsibility for managing Pea Soup’s partnership with some subset of the journals we are partnered with. We would like to announce the terrific associate editors who have signed up with us:

Hille Paakkunainen and Kate Manne will be the Associate Editors who deal with Ethics.

Jussi Suikkanen will be the Associate Editor that deals with PPA, PI, and JESP.

Zosia Stemplowska will be the Associate Editor that deals with PPE.

We are delighted these talented philosophers have signed on with us and are sure that their addition will greatly improve things at the Soup.

There thus ought to be quite a bit more activity on the blog in coming months, with discussions to be scheduled on a variety of excellent new papers in moral and political philosophy.  We hope that you will tune in and join in.

“But wait!” you might wonder, “What about the good old simple, ‘bloggy’ posts we used to have lots of?  What will become of them?”  First, let us say that our contributors are ALWAYS strongly encouraged to post what they would like on Philosophy, Ethics, or Academia, as our acronym suggests.  But we will be back in a subsequent post to announce some ideas to encourage these more informal posts in other ways.
