Conference: Human Rights in Theory and Practice

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations in 1948, and in recognition of the UDHR’s 60th anniversary, the Rutgers Institute for Law and Philosophy will host a one-day conference featuring panels on a range of philosophical and legal aspects of human rights.

The first panel, on the philosophical foundations of human rights, will consist in presentations by James Griffin, James Nickel, and Joseph Raz. The second panel, on the role of human rights in politics and political philosophy, will consist in presentations by Charles Beitz, Allen Buchanan, and Thomas Pogge. The final panel, on the impact of the UDHR on the practice of human rights law, will consist in presentations by Philip Alston, Roger Clark, and Beth Stephens.
